Per-Otto Johansson


Swedish-born conductor Per-Otto Johansson has the last years a solid profession, yet already, his résumé is remarkably accomplished. Johansson's education formed the foundations for a stellar career in classical music. He embarked on his studies at Malmö Academy of Music under Prof. Gunnar Staern. During this period, Johansson also attended masterclasses with the renowned Kurt Sanderling and Manfred Honeck. Johansson graduated with distinction from Prof. Michel Tabachnik’s conducting class
at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in 2003. Leif Segerstam and Esa-Pekka Salonen were also invaluable mentors to Johansson during this formative period.   Since those early days, Johansson has worked tirelessly to build on his knowledge, and capture the spirit of the music he so dearly loves. His work is uncompromising in its artistic approach; this is why so many of the world's premiere orchestras are eager to play under his baton.   Johansson frequently conducts leading orchestras across Scandinavia. The 2007/2008 season witnessed his debut at the Stockholm Nobel Award Gala & Ceremony, a glittering event attended by members of the Swedish Royal Family. Guests were treated to the performance of a brand new opera,   'Guldringen', based on Wagner’s Ring of the Nibelungen. In the season that followed, Johansson worked with the Danish National Opera in a performance of Mozart's The Magic Flute, and captivated audiences with a breathtaking rendition of La Bohème at Wermland Opera in Karlstad.   2010 was another momentous year for Johansson; it was one which heralded his debut with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra (the national orchestra of Sweden). The event organizers were so impressed with Johansson's performance, they instantly invited him to return the next season. Come the spring of 2011, Johansson was back at the Danish National Opera for a fresh, ambitious and highly-acclaimed production of The Barber of Seville. Here, he led epic performances with all five regional orchestras of Denmark. The response from public and critics alike was overwhelmingly positive.   Per-Otto Johansson has maintained a close attachment with the Malmö Opera, conducting Un Ballo in Maschera, Macbeth, La Bohème, Heggie’s Dead Man Walking, Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat and Hans Gefors’ chamber opera Shadowplay. Additionally, Johansson is a frequent guest conductor with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Gävle Symphony Orchestra, Wermland Sinfonietta, Dala Sinfonietta and Västerås Sinfonietta. Further acclaim for Johansson's work has come courtesy of his engagements in Denmark. Here, he has worked closely with the likes of Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and Odense Symphony Orchestra.   In recent years, Johansson has dazzled audiences in Germany and the Benelux countries with his conducting prowess. At the Theater Vorpommern, he has worked on Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hänsel und Gretel, Der Rosenkavalier, L’Italiana in Algeri, Turandot, Orfeo ed Euridice, and a host of symphonic concerts. The Theater Vorpommern later made Johansson Erst Kapellmeister; a proud moment in his career.   Consistently imbued with the energy and ambition to work on fresh projects, Johansson rarely finds the time to put down his baton. In 2014 he conducted La Traviata with Opera Zuid in the Netherlands, and an enthralling trilogy comprising sections from The Marriage of Figaro, The Barber of Seville and Fidelio at the Wermland Opera, Sweden. In 2015 he premiered Nielsen’s Maskarade at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen and conducted Rigoletto and La Cenerentola with Opera Zuid. In 2016 he made his debut with Het Gelders Orkest. In 2017 he will be back in The Netherlands with Opera Zuid again for Il Barbiere di Siviglia.
